Geopolitical risk

War, sanctions and the chokepoints — the breaks that reprice risk inside a session.

What the desk thinks

Current positions on this theme — each dated and cited to the editions behind it.

What does Antevo mean by a 'de-linked' regime?

The falsifier this position carries cannot currently be scored, and we say so rather than score it wrongly. Its first leg is the Brent premium over WTI re-widening through $7 while strait departures stay beneath their baseline. The raw series now show $7.79 and departures 15.0% under the thirty-day mean — but the WTI series rolled from the October to the November contract on 18 September, and most of that apparent widening is the roll rather than a move.

How did the Hormuz situation develop over the summer?

The second of three closes below the range floor has printed. The engine's departure series recorded 273 sailings through the strait on 19 September, below the 293 low this chronology uses as the floor of the corridor's range, and below the 280 of 17 September. The seven-day average is 290.1 against a thirty-day mean of 321.0, 15.0% beneath it. Two of the three consecutive closes this position requires are now on the board.

What is the risk of Houthi action against Saudi Arabia?

The strikes reached the Saudi capital. Over the weekend of 19 September Houthi forces struck Riyadh, with a fuel depot reported burning at the airport and air-raid alerts sounded as the assault intensified. The falsifier's two legs moved in opposite directions: Hormuz departures printed 273, a second close below the 290 this position names, while United States Gulf Coast departures recovered to 62, above the 60 the falsifier asks for.

What are the odds of a US-Iran deal, and what would it change?

Half of this was marked against us in August, and September has complicated it further. A negotiated corridor is still live — Iran and Oman began work on one in late August — but on 1 September US forces struck Iranian targets around the strait, which is not the behaviour of a channel about to close. What has not changed is that the waterway keeps running: 334 departures against a 30-day average of 321 on the session it was struck.
