Equities & the AI trade

The equity tape and the AI capex cycle inside it — indices, earnings and the concentration risk.

What the desk thinks

Current positions on this theme — each dated and cited to the editions behind it.

What is the real risk to the AI trade?

Funding, not demand — and the largest buyers have moved from equity to debt. SpaceX is seeking $40bn of debt financing led by Apollo to buy Nvidia chips; JPMorgan was pitching an 11% yield on a $5bn AI infrastructure loan in the same week; and GPU financing has reached asset-backed bonds.

Is the equity market complacent?

The falsifier came within the width of its own threshold and then inverted. The VIX printed 14.21 on the 22 September settled session, below the 14.51 low named here, while the thirty-year settled at 5.30%, on the threshold rather than above it. Protection then settled above 16 for four sessions, peaking at 16.39 on 1 October, as the long bond reached 5.637%; by 7 October the VIX had eased to 15.08 while the bond had gone on to 5.660%.

How can equities make record highs with the Strait of Hormuz shut?

The condition this position named as its falsifier occurred on 16 September, and we record it rather than explain it away. The S&P 500 fell 0.45% to 7,551.81 and the Dow 1.21% while the thirty-year rallied one basis point to 5.35% — an equity decline arriving with the long end rallying. The shape of the day argues against an earnings reading: the Nasdaq finished flat, and the dollar index posted its best session in three months, so the losses concentrated in cyclical, dollar-exposed names rather than in long-duration growth. The de-linking explanation is weakened, not retired.

Is the AI trade broadening or narrowing?

The test fired, and it moved the view. Broadcom reported AI revenue up 221% with profits tripled and the shares finished flat; by 6 September they had fallen anyway. Over the same fortnight the five-year Treasury added 24 basis points to 4.79%. The theme is being repriced as duration rather than sorted by selection.
