MCP connector
An MCP connector links an AI assistant to an outside service through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to data, tools and workflows. Anthropic introduced MCP in November 2024.

Illustrative example; the person is fictional. Marco uses an AI assistant that supports MCP and adds a connector by entering a service's MCP server address. For public tools no sign-in is needed. For private data, the assistant runs an OAuth sign-in and receives a token limited to specific scopes. The assistant then lists the tools the server offers and calls one when Marco asks, for example, for a summary of this morning's brief. In MCP terms, the assistant is the host and runs one client per server, and the service runs the server. A server can expose tools, resources and prompts. Authorisation is optional in the specification and, for HTTP servers, builds on OAuth 2.1.
