How can equities make record highs with the Strait of Hormuz shut?
Because equities are pricing the leg of the conflict that has effectively settled — the ceasefire, marked at 0.984 — and are not pricing the leg that is still moving.

The S&P 500 closed at 7,798.99 on 13 August, up 0.65% and the strongest close in the 120 sessions on file, with the Nasdaq up 0.81%. On the same day crude fell 2.43% and the strait did not reopen.
The de-linking explains the shape without requiring anyone to be irrational. Cross-asset risk appetite is reading the war leg, which is close to fully priced at 0.984. The closure leg — marked at 0.545 for four consecutive sessions — is being repriced in the horizon rather than on the front page, in freight, insurance and routing rather than in the index.
Whether that is a mistake depends on a question equities are not currently asking: what a persistent toll on the world's most important chokepoint does to costs over years rather than weeks.
