Is the AI trade broadening or narrowing?
The theme is still being repriced rather than sorted by selection, and the cap now has two parts: the rate applied to distant cash flows, and the cost of financing the build-out. Strong results are being sold even on a day the five-year falls, which points to the second.
**Marked to market, 16 October — the falsifier was tested twice and did not fire.** This position's falsifier is a strong AI result lifting its share price while the five-year holds above 4.75%. The week supplied two of the strongest results the sector can produce. ASML reported profit above expectations and customer interest in orders as far out as 2030, and its shares fell 3.95% on 14 October with the five-year at 4.99%. TSMC reported a sixth straight record profit and guided fourth-quarter revenue higher, and its US-listed shares fell 1.80% on 15 October with the five-year at 4.90%. Neither result lifted its share price, so the falsifier did not fire. The test named at the last mark, the 48 hours after the 16 September decision, has long passed and is superseded by these two. One refinement belongs here: the five-year fell nine basis points on 15 October and the shares still fell, so the discount rate alone no longer explains the cap. The brief of 16 October adds the financing of the build-out, with the cost of insuring CoreWeave's debt at a reported record, as the second weight on these names.
This position has read the theme as sorting since 14 August, and its next test named Broadcom's quarter. The quarter arrived and answered a different question than the one asked — which is why this reading is revised rather than confirmed. The August measurement is not refuted; it has stopped being the operative explanation.
On 4 September Broadcom reported AI revenue up 221% with profits tripled and the stock finished flat. By 6 September the shares had fallen anyway, extending what the desk described as a frustrating stretch. A result that strong failing to move a price locates the constraint outside the income statement, and the same week gave two more of them: South Korean semiconductor exports tripled year-on-year, and on 11 September the largest contract chipmaker reported August revenue up more than fifty per cent to a record on a session the Nasdaq fell 0.65% to 26,081.72.
What moved instead was the discount rate. From 4 to 11 September the five-year Treasury rose 24 basis points to 4.79% and the ten-year 19 to 4.98%, the front end doing more than twice the work of the long end. AI equities are the longest-duration cash flows in the listed market. A rate moving that fast prices them before earnings can, and it does so across the theme rather than name by name.
The breadth evidence points the same way. On 11 September the thirteen-F layer logged 881 newly disclosed institutional positions, and the two sides of the book disagreed in public: filers were adding breadth — among them Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom — while the disclosed short book was adding concentration, reaching into semiconductor equipment at PVA TePla, Siltronic and AIXTRON. A theme in which selection decided outcomes would not produce that shape.
The rating layer still shows nothing, which is the one part of the August reading that survives intact. The eight largest technology names carried 459 buy ratings of 646 on 31 July and 464 of 649 on 11 September — five ratings in six weeks, while the consumer panel beside them sat untouched. The scale is saturated rather than the analysts inattentive.
This is a description of behaviour, not a ranking of securities. Antevo publishes what the tape is doing and why it matters; it does not publish recommendations.
A strong AI result lifting its share price while the five-year holds above 4.75% — that would say the discount rate is not what is capping these names, and return the question to selection.
