What does positioning data tell you that price does not?

Whether a move was carried by conviction or by absence — the open question is whether managed-money crude length rose into the six-session run, or whether the futures crowd sat it out entirely.

A price move tells you what cleared. Positioning tells you who was there. When Brent rose 12.0% from its 5 August low over six sessions and then handed it back, those two readings can differ sharply.

The Commitments of Traders release on 14 August was the first positioning refresh since 4 August, which makes it the first look at that entire run. Managed-money crude net rising into it would break the read that the futures crowd sat the move out; a further fall would confirm it.

The cross-asset question is whether speculative length in gold and the yen moved in the same direction as crude over the reporting week — the test of whether this was one trade expressed three ways or three unrelated ones.
