What is gold doing, and what has been driving it?
Gold's strongest stretch of the period came when the Fed talked about hiking — its best week since January in the week to 7 August — and it has since drifted with the rest of the metals complex rather than leading it.

The sequence is the informative part. Gold had its best week since January in the week the Fed discussed hiking, which is not the textbook reaction and says the bid was about something other than the policy path.
By 13 August the complex had cooled: both metals slipped about a per cent on the session and copper did not move at all, while equities made a record and crude fell. A metals complex doing nothing on a day of large moves elsewhere is itself a read — it says the day's story was not being expressed there.
What the brief is watching next is positioning rather than price: whether speculative length in gold and the yen moved in the same direction as crude over the reporting week.
